Graffiti is not art and not smart! |
This is your reminder that the 2006 Graffiti Removal Program is successfully underway. The Red Hatters Are Coming! |
On October 27, 28 and 29th, over 400 “Red Hatters” from various Nova Scotia chapters will be in Truro for a Get-Away Weekend. Event Coordinator, Charlene MacCallum, advises that Red Hatters will “buy anything red or purple” and is hoping downtown businesses will prepare special window displays to entice members in and perhaps offer a small discount, as well. Organizers will be preparing welcome kits. If you have a coupon or other information to include, contact Charlene at

(Note: For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name, the Red Hat Society is an ever-expanding international group whose members are women 50 years of age and over who dare to wear Red Hats and purple clothing/accessories. The Society’s sole purpose is to encourage social interaction, fun and friendship in middle age and beyond.) |
In addition to local students returning to elementary, junior high and high school in the Truro area, close to 2,000 post secondary students register at various institutions in Truro each September, with about 70% being from outside the immediate area. These students make up a vital part of the local community, contributing to business, community events, volunteer efforts and more.
We encourage all downtown retailers to make them feel welcome during Orientation Week, which begins Tuesday, September 5, by placing “Welcome Back Students” signs in your windows. These specially created posters are available from the DTP office. You may also wish to offer specific specials for students, but this simple welcoming gesture will do much to encourage them to return often to Downtown Truro. Note: The NSAC Students’ Union will be taking their new students on a tour of the downtown on September 5th, so let’s roll out the Welcome Mat for them!
SOMETHING NEW!
To help you take advantage of the ‘Back to School’ opportunity, DTP will be producing Downtown Truro Desk Blotter Calendars for distribution to students at the NSAC, NSCC and Success College of Applied Arts & Technology. Advertising space is available to Downtown businesses - A great way to keep your business ‘top of mind’ throughout the entire school year.
Ad Size: 2 ¼ x 2 1/2” Cost: $125. incl. HST Copy Deadline: August 18th. Space is limited.

2nd Annual Wild Blueberry Harvest Festival |
Help paint Downtown Truro “Berry Blue”! This festival is organized by the Wild Blueberry Harvest Cooperative Ltd, which coordinates a schedule of events between communities across the region (Colchester and Cumberland counties and the Municipality of East Hants).
We encourage you to participate in whatever ways possible – feature blueberry products in your restaurant, offer samples of blueberry products in your shop, have a blues night at your pub, or feature blue in your window displays during this period. Blue Festival t-shirts and blueberry ties/scarves are available at reasonable prices to help promote the event.
Shirts are $10 and ties are $3. Festival organizers also have a limited number of free blue balloons suitable for helium, which you may find useful for decorating. If you wish to place an order for any of these items, please contact the DTP office no later than August 15th. The wild blueberry is Nova Scotia’s provincial berry and our largest agricultural export...
